ALGORITHMIC DESIRE (w/ Matthew Flisfeder)

In this interview/discussion with Dr. Matthew Flisfeder we focus on his latest book titled Algorithmic Desire. In the discussion we focus on the concept of social media as contradictory, Dr. Flisfeder’s central thesis that social media as a metaphor is central to understanding early 21st century capitalism, the tendency of social media to turn us into individuals of neoliberal capitalism who enter into instrumental competition with each other, and also breaking down trust. We further explicate Dr. Flisfeder’s renovation of Lacan’s basic thesis: “do not abandon the (algorithm) of your desire” as a metaphor that helps us recognise that social media will never function as a big Other that helps us recover the lost object at the core of subjectivity’s lack. In fact, to truly realise social media as a concept, we must bring to the surface the lack of the social realm, which involves uncovering the fetishisation of images which conceals the lack of the social order. We conclude by pointing towards a his ideas of a “New Structuralism” where lack/antagonism/gap/contradiction is central to any structure, which is opposed to New Materialist readings of humanity, as well as local particularist revivals, whether traditionalist Christian or progressivist Metamodern.
