DEATH OF THE MILLENNIAL LEFT (w/ Chris Cutrone)

In this discussion, Chris Cutrone details his intense engagement with Marxism in college and his subsequent political history which culminated in an analysis of the “millennial left” as a failure that followed a similar course to 1960s New Left in relation to mainstream capitalism. Cutrone suggests that the next generation of leftist activists are curious and open to reconsidering things, but are lost and without mentors, and at the same time are struggling to go beyond the perspective of 1960s and 1980s/1990s generation of leftists. He suggests that the 1960s counter culture as an authentic moment of a potential rebirth of the socialist left but did not think through how Marxism could really be done differently in reaction to the failure of state communism. Now we approach another crisis moment, with a looming Trump candidacy again, a new Trump era, as well as a reminder that the Bernie Sanders campaign never ended up making the socialist progress that was hoped for by the millennial left. Cutrone’s book here is hoping to function to remind us that this should not be a moment for despair, but a moment for reflection, a time to pause, reflect and think again how we should approach politics.
