The Zizek Lecture series is a lecture series hosted by Philosophy Portal.

Slavoj Zizek is a living philosophical giant whose work has not only shaped the future direction of philosophical theory and thought, but has had an outsized impact on cultural theory, political theory, as well as religious and scientific thought. His core works span four decades of sustained and consistent output, in and relevant to both academic and popular circles, a truly unprecedented achievement in and for our time.

In this context, we find it necessary to open spaces that more actively and honestly engage this work in a rigorous way, and provide contexts to discuss its impact on culture and civilisation. Towards this aim the Zizek Lecture series hosts leading theorists inspired by the philosophy of Slavoj Zizek in order to provide foundational analysis of either core concepts, essential books and articles, or general themes relevant to a deepening understanding of Zizek’s work. The lecture series is organised in annual cycles structured by two semesters, a Fall semester with monthly lectures from September to December, and a Spring semester with monthly lectures from March to June.

Members of The Portal get access to all Zizek Lectures material, but you can also register independently to Zizek Lectures as a stand-alone offer, giving you access to 8 live lectures per year, plus indefinite access to the recordings.

Four Pillars of Philosophy Portal

Slavoj Zizek’s work has been established as the main motivation and focus inspiring the course work and network at Philosophy Portal. Zizek’s philosophy is the underlying reason why Philosophy Portal has been committed to developing a curriculum orbiting Hegel’s contributions to modern philosophy, Lacan’s contributions to modern psychoanalysis, as well as engagement with contemporary theological issues from a Christian Atheist perspective, and engagement with contemporary political issues from a Conservative Communist perspective. From this work, we organise the Zizek Lectures around Philosophy Portal’s “Four Pillars” which form a logical quadruplicity orienting our work:

  1. Continental Philosophy

  2. Psychoanalytic Theory

  3. Emancipatory Politics

  4. Radical Theology

Core concepts, books, themes

The work of Slavoj Zizek spans a breathtaking diversity of concepts, books and themes. This lecture series strives to provide a comprehensive overview of this diversity, in the process opening up new avenues for thought about Zizek’s work that are currently under-discussed or overlooked. The current focus includes work oriented towards:

  • Hegelian dialectics and Lacanian psychoanalysis

  • Religion and specifically the dialectics of Christianity and Atheism

  • Zizek’s relation to other leading philosophical minds of the late 20th/early 21st century

  • The milieu of Lacanian psychoanalysis and Deleuzian philosophy

  • Progressive and conservative politics in neoliberal capitalism/post-Cold War politics

  • Quantum physics and its implications for philosophy of mind and history
