PYROTHEOLOGY (w/ Peter Rollins)
In this seminar by Peter Rollins we are offered a religious angle on Lacan. The seminar starts with a tour through Rollins history with Hegel and Lacan, especially in the context of his post-structuralist philosophy department, which was anti both structuralism and totalising narratives (which rejected Hegel’s dialectics and Lacan’s structuralism). From this experience, Rollins took his work with Lacan outside of the university, but also outside of the clinic (an odd path), and into a spiritual direction to start a Church of the Contradiction, which enacted art, music, and spoken word inspired by ideas that are often only applied in clinical contexts. From this work pyrotheology was born in the idea that division, lack and unknowing are woven into the very fabric of reality itself, which changes the way we may think of community and communion with the other.
